Vision Impaired Curling (VI Curling)

For over 40 years curling has been a popular sport in Western Canada among people who are vision impaired. This is an excellent game to keep active, enjoy being a part of a team and the opportunity to enjoy the friendly social atmosphere.

The Lions Clubs in Western Canada have always been a huge supporter of curling for people who are vision impaired. In March 2012 we will be celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Western Blind Curling Championship in Edmonton, Alberta.

VIRN encourages both recreational and competitive curling, but never lose sight of grassroots and the fun of the sport.

There are not many differences between teaching a person who is fully sighted and a person who is vision impaired to curl. By saying this it is very important to develop good communication as in any sport and to develop a trust between the coach and the curler.

Our qualified coaches offer one on one instruction to new curlers and continue to work with all our curlers to improve their techniques and understanding of the game.

There are only slight modifications in the VI Curling game. We welcome everyone to join us.

On March 3, 4, 5th, Ross Martin (Skip), Hope Gushulak (Third), Kristen Juenke (Second) and Mitchell McCallum (Lead) curled in the Gillam Mixed Bonspiel. Although placing third in the “B” event a good time was had by all. Mitchell, a Gillam High School student, hadn’t curled before but was game and made some great shots. Kristen, a lab tech at Gillam Hospital, was the only regular curler, curling in the Gillam women’s league and helped us greatly.

We are very pleased and proud to say that we have introduced curling to a number of new people this season. VIRN welcomes everyone and that was clearly reflected in the wide variety of new people who came out and who have expressed an interest in continuing and want to join a team next season.
